She holds a sceptre, and wears a high crown topped with stars. Light streams out from behind her in an aureole or mandala. This reflects the 'woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars', often identified with the Virgin, in the Book of Revelations (12:1). Sleigh Ride, c1890-95. Tracks in the snow, painted with subtle touches of blue and pink, lead our eyes to a sleigh about to disappear over the ridge of a hill. The occupants of the sleigh, one outlined in yellow moonlight, the other wearing a red scarf, seem almost incidental in the quiet grandeur of the landscape. The War in America: Fort Lafayette, the Federal Bastille for political prisoners, 1862. 'The traveller to America who enters the beautiful harbour of New York...will observe, on the right hand in passing the channel known as "The Narrows," a solitary fort on an island at some distance from the shore...Our Engraving is taken from the water, near Staten Island...For the last fifteen months Fort Lafayette (like its sister forts in the harbours of Boston and Baltimore) [had] been filled with political prisoners...On the 27th of November, little more than three weeks after the triumphs of the Democrats in New York, it took the opportunity of "Thanksgiving," which is annually celebrated throughout the North on that day...to order the liberation of all political prisoners in Forts Lafayette, Warren, MacHenry, and Delaware. On that morning the gloomy gates wore opened and the prisoners were set free without stipulation or condition. Fort Lafayette at present contains only its customary garrison for the defence of the channel, and it is to be hoped will never again be employed for any less legitimate purpose...The fort is not of great value as a means of defence, having been almost superseded in utility by Fort Hamilton...'. Shakspeare's Songs and Sonnets, illustrated, 1862. Messrs. Sampson Low, Son, and Co. have just published an elegantly-bound edition, with illustrations by Mr. John Gilbert, of the songs and sonnets of Shakspeare - the beautiful lyrics scattered through the plays with which we are all familiar...It need scarcely be said that Mr. Gilbert's illustrations are, as usual, pleasing and generally fanciful...and that they are remarkable for graceful facility and beauty of execution. We give two samples...[one] illustrates Puck's song in "Midsummer Night's Dream": "Now the hungry lion roars, And the wolf behowls the moon; Whilst the heavy plowman snores, All with weary task foredone. Now the wasted brands do glow, Whilst the scritch-owl, scritching loud, Puts the wretch that lies in woe In remembrance of a shroud. Now it is the time of night, That the graves all gaping wide; Every one lets forth his sprite, In the churchway paths to glide; And we fairies, that do run By the triple Hecate's team, From the presence of the sun, Following darkness like a dream, Now are frolic; not a mouse Shall disturb this hallow'd house. Richmond Castle, Yorkshire, by G. Dodgson, in the exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water Colours, 1862. 'We engrave this drawing not only because it is a favourable example of the artist's tender and beautiful execution, but because the oft-painted scene is represented from a new point of view and with a novel effect - that of moonlight. The view is taken from the banks of the Swale below Richmond Castle: the ruin is therefore on the left of the spectator. The shimmering, uncertain effect of moonlight is very happily conveyed by an indefinable stippled tremulousness of touch peculiar to the painter. The leaves tremble and the river flows flickeringly and waveringly in the mellow radiance. The artist must have seen the effect he so well suggests on some July midnight...Richmond Castle, perched so picturesquely on an almost perpendicular rock about 100ft. above the bed of the river, is of rare antiquarian interest. The bold Norman keep of the castle, with its walls nearly 100ft. high and lift, thick, is still almost entire, as we see in our Engraving'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862. The Convent Shrine by Frank Wyburd, in the Gallery of the British Institution, 1862. Engraving of a painting. 'This is a charming and picturesque little composition, imbued with that pious and romantic character which Mr, Wyburd loves to deal with. In an ancient convent of rude structure a nun is kneeling, telling her beads before the shrine of a saint; two other young females, whose faces denote a reverential and serious turn of thought, completing the group. "And the hymn of the nuns was heard the while, Sung low in the dim, mysterious aisle". The shrine is lighted by a lamp, unseen by the spectator, whose flickering rays fall upon the foreground with illusive effect. In the background is a landscape of lake and mountain enveloped in the cold grey hue of night or early morning. Everything in this picture is finished with admirable taste and feeling'.
