USA GLOMAR U-BOOT EXPEDITION
The Glomar Explorer, decks covered with gear, is anchored off Oiowalu, Hawaii in August of 1974. Originally built for the Central Intelligence Agency, the ship gained fame in the 1970's for its clandestine recovery of pieces of a Soviet submarine that sank northwest of Hawaii. After 17 years in mothballs near San Francisco, it will be converted into the world's largest oil drilling ship. (KEYSTONE/AP Photo/Str) === ===
