MORERO, SOMALIA- NOVEMBER 2007 .Having filled their jerry cans with fresh water from a nearby well, a group of sixty male migrants and refugees carrying tiny bundles of possessions wrapped in plastic bags, crouch tightly together on the pebbly shore at Morero. Receiving instructions from members of a smuggling gang, they have been told to line up in tens as they prepare to depart on boats that will take them on a two day voyage to Yemen. Sitting at some distance along the beach, women, children and the elderly will be boarded separately, and if lucky receive assistance, as they are marched into the water. Waiting as the crew load final supplies onto a boat moored some distance out in the shallow low tide, spots of rain fall from the heavy clouds. There is a storm brewing out at sea but the smugglers seem determined to leave before bad weather delays this shipment of human cargo. As volleys of gunfire ring out from the nearby cliffs, the tahrib are reminded that despite the risks ahead, there is no going back now. (KEYSTONE/NOOR/Alixandra Fazzina)
