ALCOHOL OXIDATION
Alcohol oxidation. Oxidation of a secondary alcohol (propan-2-ol or acetone) by potassium manganate (VII) solution (also known as potassium permanganate, KMnO4, purple, left). The manganate is a strong oxidizing agent that is reduced when it reacts, forming a colourless solution (right). The secondary alcohol turns into propan-2-one, a ketone.
