AUSTRALIEN WUESTE
Sand dunes. Aerial photograph of sand deposited in dunes near Ayers Rock, Australia. Dunes are hills of loose sand, which form in areas where the wind is strong. The movement of the grains of sand due to the wind causes the dunes to migrate across the land at up to 30 metres a year. Sand dunes adopt a characteristic shape, with the side facing the prevailing wind being longer and less steep than the opposite side. The various orientations seen, indicate that the area is affected by winds from varying directions. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/Bernhard Erdmaier) === ===
