DEACON JONES
In 12 degree temperatures, Deacon Jones, left, of Iowa, defeats previously unbeaten Henry Kennedy, of Michigan State, by less that a yard in the NCAA four mile cross country race in East Lansing, Mich., in Nov. 1955. It was the closest finish in the 17 year history of the meet. Jones, first African-American to win the NCAA title, now has beaten Kennedy in three of their five meetings at various distances. Their rivalry promises many more renewals. Both are sophomores. (AP Photo)
