On August 16th Walthamstowe Stadium will be closing the doors of it's iconic Art Deco Facade to Greyhound Racegoers for the last time. Property Developers will move in to Transform what has been one of East London's best-loved Landmarks into another apartments block. With the abolition of off-site betting duties and rising running costs, the stadium, which was opened in 1933 by William Chandler and has remained under the Chandler family for over seventy years, has found that it can no longer remain a sustainable business. The closure of Walthamstowe will leave just 2 greyhound stadia still open in the Greater London area - Wimbledon and Romford. Walthamstowe Stadium, London. England. Tuesday, August 5th 2008.
