VESICULAR STOMATITIS VIRUS INFECTION, TEM
Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) particles (orange) budding from infected cells (blue). VSV primarily infects horses, pigs and cattle, causing lesions to form in the mouth, tongue, lips, nostrils, and hooves. Discomfort due to these lesions can cause animals to refuse to eat, resulting in malnourishment. VSV can be transmitted to humans where it causes flu-like symptoms. Treatment typically involves antibiotics. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/NIAID)
