Longfellow Statue, Speaking - Major General Adolphus Washington Greeley, U.S.A., 1909. [US Army officer and polar explorer Adolphus Greely giving a speech at the unveiling of the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Memorial in Washington D.C. The bronze statue was designed by William Couper and Thomas Ball. On the dais, decorated with flags and greenery, is a plaque with lines from 'The Ship of State', one of Longfellow's poems: 'Thou, too, sail on, O Ship of State! Sail on, O UNION, strong and great!
