BRASILIEN VARIG AIRLINES
A Varig Brasil airplane takes off 26 November 2002 from the Congonhas airpport in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Reports from Brazil say that the entire board of the country's biggest airline, Varig, resigned 25 November in a row over its debts. The loss-making carrier has been trying to renegotiate a USD$900 million debt and return to profit, but Varig's owner, the Rubem Berta foundation, has thrown out the deal with the country's development bank and other creditors. Varig chairman Amin Lore was brought in to oversee the restructuring in August. Now, after only three months in the post he will go with the rest of the board, leaving the airline in uncertain territory. (KEYSTONE/EPA PHOTO/MAURICIO LIMA)
