Lady Mountbatten of Burma, President of the Returned Prisoners of War Association, became the owner of the clarinet. The instrument would not rate very highly in the opinion of Mr Benny Goodman, but it is unique in that it was fashioned from bamboo, tin from a mess - can and stolen screws in a prison camp in Japan. The man who made it while fellow prisoners kept watch for the Japanese guards is ex-Lt. Barclay Miller, who did much to boost prisoners morale at impromptu concerts in the camp.
