Interior of a Gothic Church, 1615. A church with a principal nave and two lateral aisles, separated by solid columns supporting the vault. A whiteish light filters in through the side windows, which are of plain glass, flooding the interior and emphasising the dimensions and depth of the building. Neeffs depicts a plain, light-filled interior with small side chapels located both along the side walls and attached to the columns of the nave. In one of these lateral chapels a mass is being celebrated by a priest with his back to the viewer and some kneeling worshippers. The Young Musicians, 1640. This type of painting of a group of children is frequent in the work of Antoine Le Nain. These small-format paintings depict children singing or playing, arranged in simple compositions such as the present one. Here the figures, which are all standing, are arranged almost in a straight line, with the three boys slightly more to the foreground occupying the centre and right half of the composition. Two of them are playing a small tambourine and a stringed instrument while the one in the middle is singing. Slightly behind them and on the left are two girls. The greys, browns and earth tones that prevail in the foreground and in the clothes of the children contrast with some areas of bright, strong local colour such as the red of two of the jackets and the blue apron. The Presentation of the Captain General's Baton to Antonio Moncada by the Queen Regent Blanca of Sicily in 1410, 1664. As in the previous scene, the events take place in an interior, but here the solemn event is witnessed by a large group of prelates and other dignitaries gathered before the queen’s throne. In this case Van Kessel decorated his border with putti and numerous objects and instruments relating to war, including coats-of-arms, lances, swords, arrows and standards, as well as various military musical instruments such as drums and trumpets. Van Kessel framed the scenes at the sides with pilasters and two busts symbolising Justice and Liberalitas Regis. The Submission of the Sicilian Rebels to Antonio Moncada in 1411, 1663. Antonio de Moncada, having defeated the rebels, represented by two kneeling men in the foreground, receives the keys of the city held by a young boy on a tray. Wearing ceremonial armour and holding the baton of captain-general in his hand, Antonio de Moncada accepts the gift, standing under an ornate blue canopy. Teniers completes the scene with other figures wearing decorative armour. The border by Van Kessel has six small putti playing or holding objects such as a glass of wine, flowers, crowns or swinging from large ribbons. The musical instruments, pieces of armour, flowers and two concerts of exotic birds at the top provide a brilliant framework for the historical episode. The Rest, 1709. The soldiers are resting around two large trees. In this area in the middle of a provisional camp, Watteau locates two finely dressed women, one of whom lifts up her skrits in a flirtatious manner so as not to dirty the bottom of her dress in the mud. The two women, who seem remote from the action around them, seem to be talking to each other, watched by a pair of soldiers, one of them wounded in the head and arm. Watteau added two further figures, again not connected with the military world, in the form of a young mother and her son who also take advantage of the shade of the large trees to rest. Concert Champetre, 1734. A day of leisure among the urban classes of elevated social rank on the outskirts of a city. Pater organised his concert into two clearly defined groups that occupy successive pictorial planes and form a diagonal that leads the eye into a misty landscape in the background. The principal group on the left is organised around a couple, of which the man plays the guitar while the woman points to a page in the musical score that she holds, presumably suggesting a piece for him to play. The other figures around them are grouped into pairs, chatting and commenting on the scene, apart from a young man who looks with interest at the musical score. In the group on the right, which is set against a monumental architectural element, the painter places considerable emphasis on small details such as the little girl in the foreground who attracts the dog’s attention with a bone. The Virgin on the crescent with a sceptre and a starry crown, 1516. The Virgin stands on a crescent moon, holding Christ in her arms (he holds an apple). She holds a sceptre, and wears a high crown topped with stars. Light streams out from behind her in an aureole or mandala. This reflects the 'woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars', often identified with the Virgin, in the Book of Revelations (12:1). Charles Prentice Howland, 1878. 9-year-old Charles Howland dressed for school, standing stiffly and perhaps impatiently as he poses for the artist. In his right hand is a tasseled hat and on his shoulder hangs a book bag. The son of Henry Howland, a distinguished Judge, Charles Prentice Howland had a passion for law and he grew up to become a lawyer. Virgin and Child with Saints Francis, Andrew, Paul, Peter, Stephen, and Louis of Toulouse, c. 1317-21. Six Christian saints occupy arched panels on both sides of the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus, as angels peer down from above. Jesus reappears in the center of the upper tier, surrounded by Hebrew prophets. This painting’s rounded panels and triangular pinnacles suggest the architecture of its original location—it was made for the altar of a church. Altarpieces like this one, with gold backgrounds that would have reflected flickering candlelight, were designed to encourage churchgoers in their devotions. Elizabeth And Thomas Linley, c1768. Elizabeth and Thomas Linley belonged to a family of accomplished musicians from Bath, in England, she was a celebrated singer and he, a precocious violinist. Gainsborough knew the Linleys well and his affection for the brother and sister is evident in this engaging, sympathetic portrait.
