Ichikawa of the Matsubaya, 1790-1800. The oiran, or high-ranking yuejo ‘woman of pleasure’ Ichikawa, who worked in the Matsuba house in the Edomachi Itchome district of the Yoshiwara. She is pictured here in the loose, flowing garments and informal front - tyingobi (sash), fashionable with yuejo of the time. She holds a brass pipe in her right hand and sits with a lacquer box of smoking utensils. The koi (carp) leaping upwards through a waterfall on her gorgeous uchikake (over-kimono) was associated with perseverance, and with love. The first quality is suggested in Ichikawa’s tired, poignant pose and expression, reflecting her resignation to the harsh indenture of the quarters. Amoenissimæ aliquot locorum ... effigies. Plate 17. Zu Coellen, 1635. Zu Coellen (Cologne) is Plate 17 of a collection of 24 etchings, Amoenissimae aliquot locorum. This print depicts a prospect of Cologne and the contiguous settlement of Deutz, from the vantage point of the Suedstadt of Cologne on the other side of the Rhine. The church beyond the foreground windmill is St Severin, a historic basilica with a Romanesque core. The very tall tower and spire are later gothic additions. Amoenissimae aliquot locorum is the earliest of Hollar's recorded publications. The Latin title of the series translates as 'Delightful likenesses of some places lying in various countries'. In the late 19th century she was very active in the women's suffrage movement. Subsequently Dodd and Dacre worked closely together, first in Manchester, then in London, between 1897 and 1911, when Dodd married. Peregrine Rescuing Emilia From The Inn Fire, c1786. "From the noticeboard we find the Dover, Deal, Margate and Canterbury Coaches are advertised to set out from the caravansary in question. The strangers are rudely disturbed, while the flames are lapping the old building and serpentining their way round the flammable wooden balconies. The entire population of the building has fled into the coach yard - men and women in various (and amusing) states of dress and undress abound - fire roars from the windows at upper left. A sufferer from gout is being conveyed in a wheelbarrow out of the imminent danger of being roasted alive.an antiquated husband is holding a ladder for the escape of his pretty wife; the curmudgeon is furious that the personal attractions of his better half should be thus displayed to the less privileged males around, who are assisting her delicate descent. The dangers of the fire are increased by the reckless impulse characteristic of similar casualties, in which blazing objects are hurled out of the window, spreading the flames to places which have hitherto escaped ignition.
