'Flag for Royal Saluting Point; Flag for Saluting Point...The Lady Mayoress presented on Saturday last a magnificent set of regimental colours and a pair of silver bugles of great beauty and value to the London Rifle Brigade, at the Crystal Palace, in the presence of upwards of 10,000 people. The colours, sixteen in number, included, among others, a Royal standard and a saluting-flag, bearing the initials of the brigade and the well-known civic arms and motto, in gold. They are the gift of the Corporation of London...to mark their sense of the patriotism which at the beginning of the volunteer movement led some 1500 of the citizens spontaneously to band themselves together with the view to the national defence...The silver bugles (manufactured by Distin)...bore the following inscription: "Presented by Lady Olliffe, the Lady Mayoress, on behalf of the ladies of the city of London, who offer to the officers and members of the London Rifle Volunteer Brigade this testimony of their sympathy with the patriotism which has united them for the defence of all that is dear to the women of England".' Night march at Christmastide of the Rifle Volunteers - drawn by Harrison Weir, 1st Surrey..., 1860. Creator: J Greenaway. Night march at Christmastide of the Rifle Volunteers - drawn by Harrison Weir, 1st Surrey Rifles, 1860. Music by W. M. Balfe, words by Mark Lemon. 'Step together! All together! Close together! Remember this is holy earth On which our measured footsteps tread - The living land which gave us birth! The dust of our immortal dead! Chorus. Step together! All together! Each man's true beside us; Close together! Fall together! Death can but divide us! Step together! All together! Close together! The happy spirits of our sires Look down from yon bright stars above, And from those orbs of quenchless fires Light in our hearts a patriot love...The winds shall hear across the sea The burden of our earnest song - Who hearing doubts we will be free? Who knowing this dare do us wrong?...They taunt us with our love of gold, Our hate of blood, our love of peace; We would not sell what they have sold For even life itself's increase. Step together! All together! Close together! Free mothers have not sung us lays, Or read our history's page in vain; The noble deeds of olden days, When needed, we will do again...Each man's true beside us...Death can but divide us'.
