The Death of Sophonisba, 1760. Sophonisba, who lived from 235 to 203BC, was Queen of Numidia and daughter of the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal. She married one of the Numidian chiefs, Syphax, an ally of Rome, but succeeded in dissuading him against his commitments to the Republic. Syphax was defeated at the battle of Utica by Masinissa, another Numidian chief, whom Sophonisba married, having been betrothed to him before her marriage to Syphax. Worried that this new union would also result in the defection of an ally from the Roman side, Scipio Africanus ordered Masinissa to hand over Sophonisba in order to take her as a prisoner to Rome. Unable to enter into conflict with the Roman general but determined to avoid dishonour, Masinissa sent his wife a cup of poison which she drank. The Death of Sophonisba, 1760. Traveller at a Cottage Door, 1649. A traveller or possibly an itinerant worker to judge from his clothes and the objects he carries (a satchel and sheepskin rucksack) at the entrance to a humble dwelling. Van Ostade used the façade of this poor cottage as the backdrop for the traveller and the three members of a peasant family. The traveller is seen standing, leaning on his staff while he speaks to the woman seated on the ground who has placed her spinning tools beside her. Their young son, with his hat on the ground, timidly hides his face in his mother’s lap. The Young Musicians, 1640. This type of painting of a group of children is frequent in the work of Antoine Le Nain. These small-format paintings depict children singing or playing, arranged in simple compositions such as the present one. Here the figures, which are all standing, are arranged almost in a straight line, with the three boys slightly more to the foreground occupying the centre and right half of the composition. Two of them are playing a small tambourine and a stringed instrument while the one in the middle is singing. Slightly behind them and on the left are two girls. The greys, browns and earth tones that prevail in the foreground and in the clothes of the children contrast with some areas of bright, strong local colour such as the red of two of the jackets and the blue apron. Ichikawa of the Matsubaya, 1790-1800. The oiran, or high-ranking yuejo ‘woman of pleasure’ Ichikawa, who worked in the Matsuba house in the Edomachi Itchome district of the Yoshiwara. She is pictured here in the loose, flowing garments and informal front - tyingobi (sash), fashionable with yuejo of the time. She holds a brass pipe in her right hand and sits with a lacquer box of smoking utensils. The koi (carp) leaping upwards through a waterfall on her gorgeous uchikake (over-kimono) was associated with perseverance, and with love. The first quality is suggested in Ichikawa’s tired, poignant pose and expression, reflecting her resignation to the harsh indenture of the quarters. Rembrandt wears a fanciful 16th-century style plumed beret tilted at a jaunty angle and a fur-trimmed overcoat, while Saskia wears an old-fashioned veil. In addition to serving as one of many self-portraits, this small etching can also be regarded as an example of a marriage portrait. The young woman shown seated at the table with Rembrandt is his wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh, then in her early twenties. They had married two years before this etching, and remained together for eight years until Saskia's untimely death at the age of 30.
