01 May 2024, Saxony-Anhalt, Memleben: View of the excavation site of a former church near Memleben. Not far from the monastery, they discovered a fortified settlement with a church and a residential building. In the Middle Ages, there was a 16-metre-long, single-nave church with a semi-circular apse and a basement extension to the west, which had a staircase entrance. The church replaced an older, smaller sacred building. It included a densely populated cemetery. Head niche graves and stone-set sarcophagi from the 10th to 12th centuries were uncovered. The rich find material proves the settlement from the 9th to 14th century. In addition to Slavic pottery decorated with waves, bronze knife sheath fittings, projectiles from crossbow bolts, a Gothic key and a late medieval pilgrim's sign depicting a crowned ruler came to light.
