Illustration of a young Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), German composer, in Vienna in 1801. Beethoven's early life in Bonn was made miserable by his father, who wanted him to be a profitable child prodigy. He was taught first by his father, then Neefe, before moving to Vienna at age 21 to study with Haydn. He was a virtuoso pianist, although in his late 20s increasing deafness led him to concentrate on composing. His legacy includes nine symphonies, five piano concertos, a violin concerto, 32 piano sonatas, 16 string quartets, the great mass 'Missa solemnis' and the opera 'Fidelio'. He is regarded as a giant of the classical tradition, although his work is also a transition toward the romanticism of the 19th century. This is most clearly seen in the symphonies. FELIX MENDELSSOHN, GERMAN COMPOSER, ILLUSTRATION

Illustration of the German composer Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). He was born Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Hamburg, son of a banker. He was considered a child prodigy - he studied piano from the age of six, made his first concert appearance at the age of nine and started composing at the age of twelve. His first symphony, the C minor Opus 11, was completed when he was just 15. Essentially conservative in style, Mendelssohn's compositions are now among the most popular of the Romantic era. Numbering more than 750, these include the incidental music to 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' including the famous wedding march (1842), the Scottish Symphony (1829-42), the Italian Symphony (1833) and the Violin Concerto in E minor (1844). He also founded a major music school, the Leipzig Conservatory, in 1843. He died following a series of strokes in Leipzig at the age of just 38. Illustration of George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), a German-born composer who settled in London in 1712 and became a naturalised British citizen in 1727. A master of the 18th century oratorio, his style has been called Italianate Baroque. He composed works for state occasions such as the orchestral suites the 'Water Music' commissioned by George I, 'Music for the Royal Fireworks' for George II, and the anthem 'Zadok the Priest' for the coronation of George II in 1727.
