The Card Players, 1520. A woman flanked by two men seated around a circular table that occupies the foreground of the painting. On the table top, which has a print of fleurs-de-lys, are a number of small stacks of cards and piles of money. The woman, positioned frontally, points to the jack of spades while the young man on our left has the king of spades in his hand and looks at the other man who shows him the eight of spades. The scene takes place in an exterior that contains a limited number of elements, including a tree trunk, a rustic fence and an area of blue sky. It has been suggested that it is a possibly an allegory of love in which two men are rivals for the woman’s favours and in which the young man on the left has the advantage, indicated by the king of spades in his hand. The painting has also been read in a political key, in which the three figures could be Charles V on the left, Margaret of Austria, regent of the Low Countries, and Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, ambassador of Henry VIII of England. Concert Champetre, 1734. A day of leisure among the urban classes of elevated social rank on the outskirts of a city. Pater organised his concert into two clearly defined groups that occupy successive pictorial planes and form a diagonal that leads the eye into a misty landscape in the background. The principal group on the left is organised around a couple, of which the man plays the guitar while the woman points to a page in the musical score that she holds, presumably suggesting a piece for him to play. The other figures around them are grouped into pairs, chatting and commenting on the scene, apart from a young man who looks with interest at the musical score. In the group on the right, which is set against a monumental architectural element, the painter places considerable emphasis on small details such as the little girl in the foreground who attracts the dog’s attention with a bone. Corner of a Library, 1711. An interior set against a plain wall with a bookcase to one side on which are neatly arranged volumes in perfect order. The bookcase is designed to allow easy access to the top shelves on which the largest volumes are kept, while a striking element is the curtain intended to protect them from dust and light. Leaning against the side of the bookcase are what appear to be rolled-up maps, together with an oriental lance, one of the various oriental items in the room. The foreground is used for a table covered with a splendid Chinese textile on which the artist has depicted a terrestrial and a celestial globe, an armillary sphere and an atlas. A passage in the Histoire des ducs de Borgogne by Barante describes how the Duke of Orléans displayed the naked body of his lover Mariette d’Enghien, wife of his former chamberlain Aubert le Flamenc, to her husband, concealing her face. Her husband failed to recognize her. Together with Barante’s text another more detailed one has been mentioned, which the artist may have used as his source. This is Les vies de dames galantes by Brântome, republished in 1822, two years before Barante’s text. Jan Lutma, goldsmith, 1656. Although Jan Lutma (c. 1584-1669) was already an elderly man when he was portrayed, he was probably still working as a silversmith. Yet despite the presence of a hammer and a pot containing punches, he is not working here but posing. He holds one of his creations - an object with a turned stem, possibly a candlestick - in his right hand, and beside him on the table is a chased silver drinking bowl. Lutma was born in Emden in East Friesland. After spending five years in Paris, he settled in Amsterdam in 1621, where he built up a reputation as a master silversmith and received a series of official commissions. As he grew older he began to experience problems with his eyes. Yet in 1656 he declared that he had been cured of his blindness. Japanned Bureau Cabinet, c1720.This spectacular bureau cabinet reflects the fascination with Japanese and Chinese luxury goods in the early eighteenth century, seen through a distinctly European lens. The bright red surface imitated Asian lacquer. The motifs evoke the people and sights of the Far East, but they reflect the limited knowledge and stereotyped views that Europeans held of these distant countries. At the time the cabinet was made, this style of imitation lacquer and decoration was called Japanning. The original owner may have displayed small Asian porcelains in the upper niches.
