LIGHTS OF EUROPE AT NIGHT SEEN FROM SPACE
Lights of Europe at night from space. Several countries, such as the UK, Belgium, and Holland (left of centre), show great concentrations of light. The coast of most of Europe can be traced by the lights of towns, as can the Nile Delta at lower right. At far right is Moscow, the centre of transport 'spokes'. The red lights in the North Sea (left of centre), the Sahara Desert (bottom) and Syria (bottom right) come from oil fields. This image is a mosaic of frames made at night by US Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/COPYRIGHT W.T. SULLIVAN III & HANSEN PLANETARIUM)
