AEGYPTEN ASSUAN STAUDAMM
Lake Nasser, Egypt. Boat on Lake Nasser, seen from the Aswan High Dam (part of the edge of which is at bottom). The dam (built from 1960-1970) blocked the River Nile, creating Lake Nasser. The lake is 480 kilometres long, but only 16 kilometres wide at the widest point. It holds over 150 billion cubic metres of water and displaced 90,000 people when it flooded Lower Nubia. At the time, it was the largest manmade lake in the world. The water is released through the dam to control the Nile flood, and is stored for use in times of drought. The dam is also used to generate electrical power. The lake is named for Egypt's President Nasser (1918-1970). Photographed in April 2003. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/) === ===
