CHINA BEIJING SMOG
Mid-morning traffic crawls through the thick smog in Beijing's Central Business District on Thursday, 10 August 2006. Beijing is one of the world's most polluted cities and faces a major challenge in bringing air quality to an acceptable level for the showcasing at the 2008 Olympics. Many locals expect that factories will simply be closed down and severe traffic controls introduced during that period effectively shutting down normal life in the absence of any more practical solution.
