ISRAEL STAATSGRUENDUNG 1948
Israel's first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion (standing under a portrait of Theodor Herzl, the founder of political Zionism), surrounded by members of the National Jewish Council, at 6.01 PM 14 May 1948 in Tel Aviv, officially proclaims the state of Israel. On the same day, Israel received the de facto recognition of the United States and on 17 May the Soviet Union extended de jure recognition.
