MONGOLEI NOMADEN WOHNEN
An elderly woman that has endured many harsh Mongolian winters walks out of a 'ger' (a tent-like structure built with a collapsable wooden frame) 250 km west of Ulaan Baatar, Saturday 06 September 2003. Roughly 50 percent of Mongolia's 2.5 million people still maintain a nomadic lifestyle, moving all their possessions as often as twice a month in search of fresh grass for their livestock. The nomads continue to move even during the winter when temperatures can sink to a brutal negative 40 degrees celcius. With a land mass five times that of Germany; Mongolia's extremely low population density of 1.4 square kilometers per person has preserved this ancient lifestyle.
