The Tamil Nadu state government along with Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has set up over 900 bed COVID-19 care facility for people affected by coronavirus disease at the Chennai Trade Centre (CTC) following a sharp surge in COVID-19 and Omicron variant of the Sars-Cov-2 virus across the state of Tamil Nadu. Within a week, authorities had shifted as many as 400 patients to the COVID-19 care facilities in the city. As per the Union Health Ministry's data on 16 January, India reported more than 271,202 fresh COVID-19 cases and 314 deaths in the last 24 hours.
