This storm formed on 30 August, reaching hurricane strength on 4-5 September, weakening, and then regaining hurricane strength by 9 September. It made landfall in the south-eastern and mid-Atlantic USA from 14-15 September, causing extensive flooding and destruction from rain, wind and storm surges. States of emergency and evacuation orders were declared along the threatened coasts (North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia).
