A scientist carrying an accordeon heads to the Kings Bay research station's central cafeteria on Spitsbergen in Ny-Aelesund, Norway, 10 April 2015. Arctic research stations occupied by Norway, Germany (Koldewey Station of the Alfred Wegener Institute), France, and China are continuously working in the former miners' settlement in the Svalbard archipelago. Stations are manned by Italy, Great Britain, and Japan, as well as smaller buildings for researchers from Spain and the Netherlands, only for a limited time period. The collective infrastructure maintained by Kings Bay, which includes an Ocean Research Laboratory, cafeteria, harbor installation, and workshops, comprises the foundation of the research.
