The tethered balloon at Atmospheric Obervatory of the AWIPEV Arctic Research Base can be seen on Spitsbergen in Ny-Aelesund, Norway, 09 April 2015. The tethered balloon can climb many hundreds of meters and takes measuring probes for temperature and pressure measurements at various heights. The Atmospheric Observatory provides long-term measurements of different atmospheric parameters relevant for climate change. Arctic research stations occupied by Norway, Germany (Koldewey Station of the Alfred Wegener Institute), France, and China are continuously working in the former miners' settlement in the Svalbard archipelago. Stations are manned by Italy, Great Britain, Japan, as well as smaller buildings for researchers from Spain and the Netherlands only for a restricted time period. The collective infrastructure maintained by Kings Bay, which includes an Ocean Research Laboratory, cafeteria, harbor installation, and workshops, comprises the foundation of the research.
