Unseasonal weather in the form of consecutive cold fronts hitting the Cape have caused massive seas and huge waves for the surfers to ride at the offshore reefs. These waves are too big and fast to paddle into so the surfers use personal water craft (PWC) to tow them into the swells. The surfers ride custom made surfboards that are heavier than normal and are fitted with footstraps to help control the board at high speeds.
