SPACE SHUTTLE DISCOVERY
NASA's seventh Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, (TDRS-7), being released from the cargo bay of Shuttle Discovery. The white and gold structure at the bottom of the satellite is the inertial upper stage, a booster that will propel the satellite into a higher, geostationary orbit. The TDRS satellites provide communications links between orbiting spacecraft, such as the Shuttle, and ground control stations. TDRS-7 was deployed during STS-70, (6/13/95-6/22/95). The five-member crew accomplished the deployment during their first day in space. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE SOURCE/Science Source)
