epa05006287 Waves from the Indian Ocean break on the retaining walls of the popular recreation spot, the Galle Face Green in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 01 November 2015. The Galle Face Green is an urban park of some five hectares stretching for nearly half a kilometre along the coast opposite the former Parliamentary building in Colombo. The promenade was constructed in 1859 by Governor Sir Henry George Ward during the Colonial times and was at that time used for horse racing, cricket, polo, football, tennis, rugby and as a golf course. The major part of the Green was for some time out of bounds for civilians due to the existence of the Sri Lanka Army headquarters nearby - now relocated, the island's main harbour and Navy headquarters as well as the defence headquarters. After the war was concluded in May 2009, the Galle Face Green has regained its popularity as the best recreational location in the city and fully crowded during weekends and on holidays.
