HOCHSEE TIERE WAL
Long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas). These animals are not whales, but dolphins. They are found in all temperate and sub-polar waters except the North Pacific. They mostly eat squid, but will also take fish and octopus. Pilot whales are social animals, living in groups, or pods, that can number 100s of individuals and often associate with other dolphins and whales. They are usually found in deep water, but do venture into shallow water for food. Social bonds are often so strong that when 1 individual becomes stranded, others will follow, leading to mass strandings. Photographed in Mediterranean Sea.
