PALAESTINA NAHOST KONFLIKT SIEDLER RAEUMUNG
An Israeli soldier embraces his sister just outside the main synagogue in the settlement of Neve Dekalim, Gush Katif, Gaza Strip on Thursday 18 August 2005. The soldier is deployed with a unit which may have to storm the synagogue. His sister is an anti-pullout activist who has defied orders to evacuate Neveh Dekalim and is taking refuge inside the synagogue. Israeli soldiers and police have surrounded the synagogue and are in negotiations with the settlers and their supporters to leave peacefully. It is estimated that about 1000 people have taken refuge in the synagogue. EPA/STEFAN ZAKLIN
