USA RAUMFAHRT SPACE SHUTTLE ATLANTIS
Astronauts Carl Walz (l) and Jerome Apt working on the Cartilage in Space Experiment within the Spacehab science module on board the Space Shuttle Atlantis. This biotechnology experiment investigated tissue formation and basic cell-to-cell interactions in a low-gravity, stationary cell culture. Microgravity conditions like this one offer a unique environment for the production of tissue cultures. Photographed on Mission STS-79, (16-26 September 1996), while the Shuttle was docked to the Russian space station Mir. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE SOURCE/Science Source)
