Debbie Spellman dries her son's laundry outside his 'caravan', or mobile home, in the 'illegal outpost' settlement called Ginnot Ariye (Ariyeh's Garden) on the outskirts of the West Bank settlement of Ofra on Wednesday, 31 December 2003. The Spellman's are Jewish settlers who have lived in the Golan Heights since 1974 and raised their children there. Their son moved to this "outpost" and found work in the Ofra settlement, paying rent on the caravan home. His mother, a firm believer in the Jewish scriptures, came to help her son in what she calls these, "difficult times", as he might face eviction from his home at the time when he is called up to serve his Israeli army reserve duty. Israel served eviction notices to the Jewish settlers who live here but no one ihas yet begun demolishing their own home. (KEYSTONE/EPA/Jim Hollander)
