MILKY WAY OVER THE ATACAMA DESERT
Milky Way over the Atacama Desert. Arc of the Milky Way in the night sky over a vehicle on a road in the Atacama Desert in the Atacama region of Chile. At lower right, near where the road meets the horizon, are two satellite dwarf galaxies, the Small Magellanic Cloud and Large Magellanic Cloud. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. The colourful nebulae at upper left are part of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, with Jupiter the white dot below. At upper right, the white fuzzy object is the globular cluster Omega Centauri. Photographed in 2019. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/MIGUEL CLARO/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
