SENEGAL RALLY DAKAR
South African driver Giniel de Villiers (R) and Swedish co-driver Tina Thorner (L) at the finish of the 2006 Dakar rally at Lac Rose, Senegal, Sunday 15 January 2006. Their new Race Touareg 2 took the second position in the car category and was constantly in the top-three overall after the eighth of 15 stages. It is the first time in the twenty-eight year history of the desert classic that a diesel powered car finished second. Frances driver Luc Alphand won the rally 17:53 ahead of de Villiers.
