FORSCHUNG PHYSIK
Three-jet event. Computer display of a particle collision in the ALEPH detector at CERN, the European centre for particle physics near Geneva. ALEPH is one of 4 giant particle detectors at the LEP electron- positron collider. The display shows the central part of ALEPH's cylindrical detector, seen end-on and with various instruments coloured red, blue and yellow. The solid red lines are tracks of high-momentum particles grouped in 3 distinct "jets", typically the signature of the decay of a quark, anti-quark and gluon created in the original electron-positron annihilation. The dotted yellow tracks are low-momentum particles. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/PHILIPPE PLAILLY) === ===
