DEUTSCHLAND BERLIN MAUERFALL 1989
GDR television informed the population about new travelling rules for GDR citizens in the news programme 'Aktuelle Kamera' (lit:Topical camera) on the evening of 09 November 1989. Before, the press conference with SED polit bureau member Guenter Schabowski, in which the sensational news were made public, had been broadcast directly. Schabowski had announced that all borders between the GDR and West Germany and West Berlin were open for all GDR citizens from that moment onwards. In a few hours, thousands of citizens of East Berlin went into the western part of the city to celebrate the event. (KEYSTONE/DPA/DB)
