GROSSBRITANNIEN PHYSIK PETER HIGGS
Portrait of Professor Peter Higgs (b.1929), professor of theoretical physics at Edinburgh University. In 1964, Higgs proposed the existence of the 13th elementary particle, called the Higgs Boson. Yet to be discovered by experiment, the Higgs Boson may be used by many of the Grand Unified Theories (GUT) to unify the electromagnetic, strong nuclear and weak nuclear fundamental forces. Professor Higgs was awarded the 1990 Scottish Science Award for his work. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/PETER MENZEL/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
