OLYMPIC GAMES '72: CLOSED OFF OLYMPIC VILLAGE
Police and their vehicles in front of the Olympic Village during the Olympic Games in Munich on the 5th of September in 1972. Arabic terrorists of the group "Black September" had entered the village in the morning, overwhelmed nine athletes and shot two. Their ultimatum: Release of two hundred captured Palestinians and free withdrawal with the remaining hostages. In the evening, the terrorists and the hostages took a helicopter to the military airbase Fuerstenfeldbruck. Hours later, the release operation failed. All nine hostages, five terrorists and one policeman from Munich were killed, three terrorists injured and overwhelmed. (KEYSTONE/DPA/dpa)
