Aldrin and Leonov, space pioneers. US astronaut Buzz Aldrin (left, born 1930) with Soviet-Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov (right, born 1934). Aldrin, lunar module pilot for the Apollo 11 mission, was the second person to walk on the lunar surface, doing so on 21 July 1969 with Neil Armstrong. Aldrin, who retired from NASA in 1971, has published and lectured on his experiences in space. Leonov performed the first spacewalk, doing so during the Voskhod 2 mission of 18 March 1965. From 1976 to 1982, he supervised Soviet cosmonaut training. Photographed in June 2011, at the Starmus Festival, the Canary Islands.
