A MILLION SHILLINGS
BASATINE, YEMEN- MARCH 2008 .At dusk, a bright strip light tied to a tree becomes a magnet for new arrivals. Each evening, the ÒLo JireÓ or cowboys meet together here. There is no particular attraction, only that the tree is located on Basatine's main junction and it has somehow become a known gathering point. Hanging around with a swagger, young men stand smoking and drinking sodas, people watching and chit chatting about the latest rumours, jobs and contacts. At times groups disappear off into nearby money transfer offices, internet cafes and call centres as they try to fix up their new lives. Before they find their feet however, for their first week or so, the cowboys have a focal point. (KEYSTONE/NOOR/Alixandra Fazzina)
