PHOTONIC CRYSTALS

Photonic crystals. Computer artwork of assorted photonic crystals, materials that can trap and direct light (photons). Photonic crystals could be used in optical computers that use photons, not electrons, to carry information. This allows them to be smaller and more efficient. Several types of photonic crystal are seen here. The tall orange blocks are three-dimensional periodic photonic crystals. The arrays of blue balls are metallo- dielectric crystals, which trap microwave radiation instead of light. SILICON LIGHT-EMITTER

Silicon light-emitter. Forceps holding a silicon-based light-emitting diode (LED). Designed by Professor Kevin Homewood and his team at the University of Surrey, England, this diode uses silicon atoms to produce light. This technology could be used for building computer chips that use light instead of wires to transmit information. Because light beams are much smaller than even the smallest wires, computers of the future could be much smaller. AUTUMNAL VINE LEAVES

Vine leaves (Vitis sp. ) showing autumnal colours. Vines are deciduous plants that shed their leaves in autumn to prevent water loss and frost damage. The vivid colours are due to the breakdown of the green pigment chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight during photosynthesis. ROCK UNCONFORMITY

Rock unconformity. An unconformity is a break between two rock types laid down at different times. This is an angular unconformity (or nonconformity), in which the rock layers are at different angles. Here, sedimentary rock (upper half) was formed by the deposition of successive layers of particles which became compressed. This occurred after the underlying igneous rock was folded. QUANTUM COMPUTER

Quantum computer. Superconducting magnet housing a liquid solution of a chemical that forms a 5-bit (or 5-qubit) quantum computer. The computer uses NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) techniques. The chemical was designed with its molecule having 5 linearly-coupled nuclear spins. These 5 spins (a magnetic quantum property) form the 5 bits of the quantum computer. The spins are manipulated using radio-frequency pulses and the effects monitored using this superconducting magnet. This quantum computer has been used to solve mathematical problems.
