VENEZUELAN RED HOWLER MONKEY
Venezuelan red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus) in a tree. This howler monkey lives in the tropical forests of northern South America and some southern Caribbean islands. It is almost exclusively arboreal, hardly ever leaving the canopy of the forest. It feeds mainly on leaves, with some flowers and fruits. It moves slowly through the trees, without the abandon of some other monkeys. Its tail is very strong and is used as a fifth limb when climbing. It takes its name from the extremely loud vocalisations that it uses to communicate. Photographed in the Brazilian Pantanal. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/MANUEL PRESTI)
