BENJAMIN PEIRCE, US MATHEMATICIAN
Benjamin Peirce (1809-1880), US mathematician. Peirce taught at Harvard University, USA, for some forty years. He graduated from Harvard and became a tutor there in 1829. He was appointed professor of mathematics in 1831, and then also of astronomy in 1842. He made contributions to number theory, celestial mechanics, algebra and the philosophy of mathematics.
