PARRY'S 2ND ARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1821-1823
Parry's 2nd Arctic expedition. Historical artwork of the British Royal Navy ships HMS Fury and HMS Hecla in October 1821 during the Arctic expedition of 1821-1823. This expedition, commanded by William Edward Parry (1790-1855), attempted to sail the Arctic's North-West Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific. The ships are sailing along a channel cut to bring them to their winter berths at Winter Island. Like other expeditions of the time, they were unable to find a way through the ice to reach the Pacific. This artwork is from a journal published in London by Parry in 1824.
