Mental health, 1813 caricature. Historical artwork by the British caricaturist George Cruikshank (1792-1878), titled 'The Blue Devils'. A man suffering from mental and psychological disorders is shown surrounded by imps or sprites representing his depressed thoughts. Included in the scene are unpaid bills, a sign saying 'pray remember poor debtors', a book page titled 'ennui' (boredom), and books on domestic medicine and the miseries of human life. Several of the devils are offering him a noose for hanging and a cut-throat razor. A picture on the wall depicts domestic strife, and an empty wine bottle is at left. At lower left, a funeral procession shows one possible outcome of this scene. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/GEORGE BERNARD)
