JAPAN TOKIO ERDBEBEN 1923
1998 marks the anniversary of the terrible events of September 1923, in wich the Japanese cities of Tokyo and Jokohama suffered massive damage in one of the worst earthquakes ever to hit this island nation. Official figures of the time put the death toll at some 72'600 with over 298'000 houses burned and a further 36'156 collapsed. The stoicism with wich the people reacted is legendary. OPS: Survivors of the erathquake sit calmly with their remainding possessions in one of the few undamaged Tokyo street. (KEYSTONER/CAMERA PRESS/ILN)
