California Gold Rush. Picture of Sutter's Mill, taken in 1850, with James Wilson Marshall (1810-1885) in the foreground. Sutter's Mill was located on the South Fork of the American River in Coloma, California, USA. It was here on 24th January 1848, that Marshall found several flakes of gold in the American River that would lead to the California Gold Rush and made the mill famous. Marshall was a carpenter and sawmill operator, and partner of James Sutter, the owner of the mill.
