Apartheid consists of hundreds of laws that allow the ruling white minority in South Africa to segregate, exploit and terrorize the vast majority; Africans, mostly, but also Asians and Coloureds - people of mixed race. Under Apartheid, racist beliefs are enshrined in law and any criticism of the law is cruelly suppressed. Criticism is nevertheless on the increase: demonstrations, strikes and riots at home, mounting diplomatic pressure abroad. In 1976 the UN unanimously condemned the elevation of one of the homelands - Transkei - into an independent State because it remains dependent on South Africa. Not one country in the world has recognized the new State. A World Conference for Action Against Apartheid will be held in Nigeria in 1977. (KEYSTONE/United Nations/Str) === ===
